ARE YOUR TAX DOLLARS FUNDING SWEATSHOPS?
The Problem: Worker Abuses
A sweatshop is a factory where workers face long hours in harsh conditions for very low pay – sometimes in conditions of virtual slavery. In the garment industry, eighty percent of workers are young women, many just children, and they often face sexual abuse and intimidation, hazardously unsafe working conditions, and mandatory unpaid overtime. A sweatshop is a factory in which the dignity of workers is denied.
The Solution: San Antonio SweatFree Ordinance
We are asking the city of San Antonio to pass an ordinance ensuring that all city purchases of garments and textiles are made in factories that do not engage in workplace abuses and human rights violations. Cities and states across the country have passed similar ordinances, and by joining this movement for dignity and justice we can make a tangible improvement in the lives of millions.
The San Antonio Against Sweatshops Campaign invites the community to learn more about the realities of sweatshops, and what we can do about it.
